One of the best things I have ever done for my own career, image and business, is to sell the MCG – well parts of it actually. (The MCG – or Melbourne Cricket Ground, is an Australian icon. Some of the most prestigious sports events in Australian history have been held at what is Australia’s Yankee Stadium)

In 2005 the MCG was undergoing a massive $434 million redevelopment. Now in one section of the MCG was the prestigious MCC members, which had very time honoured and well known carpet on its floors. This carpet had the monogram of the ‘members club’ titled on it – as seen below.

This meant that the specially crested carpet which had supported many thousands of famous feet, was going to be replaced, along with some of the flooring and some of the seating.

After a few phone calls I bought the famous carpet along with a bunch of the stadiums timber – from the wrecker.

I then set about getting it cut up and framed with pieces of the flooring and seating.

Now, I had a great idea. I followed through on it. I did the leg work and took the risks necessary to make it happen and here I was with this great product that had huge potential. What to do from here?

Of course marketing was the answer, but at 21 one doesn’t have the massive marketing budgets of some of the major companies around. I had to think smarter. I had to use FREE PUBLCITYand I had to use it well, or I would be sitting around a lot of pieces of carpet for a very long time.

I had to write a press release and it had to be a darn good one. The heading read: “21 Year Old Sells MCG for under $500.” This one heading generated over $50,000 worth of FREE advertising and publicity for me.
